The Frank Buck Story
Frank Buck’s life is centered around his family and his work. His wife Lulu, their three children, Kaycee, Brayden, and Copper, and their three dogs, lead busy, active lives with tremendous love and support. Frank Buck is assistant principal and athletic director at Mead High School, where he is at the center of the flurry of activity of sports and the entire student body. More importantly, he is the center of positivity and encouragement, embodying the fighting, hopeful spirit that marks who he is. Frank is our Happy Smackah.
In January, Frank received a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer. Initially, he was given the diagnosis of a year to live. He and Lulu were shocked, but they channeled their disbelief into action when they reached out for a second opinion. Frank’s parents had fought their own battles with cancer and had received treatment at Ironwood Cancer Center in Phoenix, Arizona. They flew down there immediately, and hope flourished fully when Frank’s former student, on staff there, reached out and compelled Frank to work with them, telling him, his former coach: “Don’t throw the white flag in.”
The first few weeks of the aggressive treatment filled their calendars at a dizzying pace. Frank’s treatment has come together, with his doctors at Ironwood partnering with his doctors locally at Medical Center of the Rockies. Frank is fighting a war, and he’s taking up arms, eager to fight each battle. He’s embraced the positives and accepted the bumps. He’s pragmatic about what he must do. He’s positive because that’s who he has always been.
The Bucks are in the process of figuring out all of his treatment, and this new life. Frank and his family are truly giving spirits, and the thought of those gifts they’ve given throughout the years coming back to them moves them deeply. Both he and Lulu are kind, compassionate people filled with gratitude for everyone. We are proud to support Frank Buck as the 2016 Happy Smackah.
